Project A1 focuses on two African macro-regions, Ethiopia and Egypt. During the last years geoarchaeological investigations at two sites (Mochena Borago in Ethiopia and Sodmein Cave in Egypt) had been at the forefront of the project. In contrast, the research aims for the currently proposed phase concentrate on a comprehensive understanding of past environments and population dynamics on a regional scale by integrating data from various archaeological sites and palaeoenvironmental archives. This will be done in close collaboration particularly with subprojects A3, F6 and Z2.
