U. Hempel postulates that the pro-osteogenic effect of aECM/sGAG derivatives on MSC and osteoblasts is also due to changes in endogenous ECM (nECM). Therefore, sGAG-induced changes in the structure, composition and mechanics of the nECM as well as the phosphorylation status of ECM proteins will be characterized. On the other hand, intracellular interaction partners and signaling pathways of sGAG derivatives will be analyzed. Finally it will be studied whether aECM supports the osteogenic differentiation of hMSC from hair follicles and support hMSC from patients with impaired bone healing.
