The ability for strategy change during user-companion dialogs, i.e. the change in action and/or action planning while overarching goals are maintained, is a fundamental competence of companion-systems. Employing an animal experimental approach allows the investigation of the underlying mechanisms of strategy change on the level of neuronal circuits and make them implementable in technical systems. We have shown that strategy change involves particular synapse-dependent learning mechanisms which require the coordination of separate modules of knowledge representation and dynamic behavioral adaptation. On the basis of these results we develop new forms of support for user-companion dialogs.
